Matthew 1:18-19: “This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.”
Strict to the loose sense of modern language and vocabulary (paradox intended), Jesus came from an 'unwanted pregnancy', which categorically makes Him an 'unwanted child'. Albeit the contemporary sense of "unwanted" means to be out of an unexpected pregnancy due to either "sexual violation", "fornication", or unexpected/unplanned pregnancy, even wedlock, the opposite is true for Jesus given that His was rather the oxymoronic: virgin birth—something that Mary consented despite fear and confusion; something that she had been prepared for so her life was pleasing to the LORD, something anticipated since the days of Isaiah the prophet. But, how is Jesus really an 'unwanted child'?
His name, Jesus, means Savior, Immanuel— God with us. Sounds old school... very cliché. However, in our fallen condition as human beings, something which we blindly and arrogantly deny by default, we did not and will not want Him 'near'. The fact that we will feel relatively good compared to others, thus our initial push back and ignorance for the need of a savior is right away the manifestation of us 'unwanting' the Son. Because Jesus—God—is light, naturally we will not like the idea of being exposed to light and rather stop at the cold dark pleasures of sin, as offered by the world together with our fallen condition. The world will never want Him. We... will never want Him (Cf. John 1:10; 3:19; 4:17).
But, thank goodness, things happen not because we want or don't want them, but because God wants so. He wants us. Clear. He does not need us. He wants us. So, through Jesus, the 'unwanted' Son of Man, God made us His 'unwanted children'. Really, if we were God, we will surely not want to adopt ourselves as children (if you don't agree, just try thinking of adopting the most annoying person you know, even for just a day... [vs. John 1:12-13; Romans 5:8]). We are really unwanted. But in His grace and justice, Jesus willingly wanted to be unwanted so our 'unwantedness' might be washed away and make us worth wanting by God and be His friends, children and heirs.... forever. So, are you ready to admit that you were an... 'Unwanted Child'? I am. #Retrieved4252016
